You reach Islamorada on US 1, the Overseas Highway. This page covers what official sources say about the highway, the bike trail beside it, getting around once you arrive, and coming in by boat. Some things we leave out on purpose. We have not sourced drive times, airport distances or Monroe County entry rules, so we do not print them. For live road conditions, ask the agency that runs the road.

By road: US 1, the Overseas Highway

The Village says Islamorada sits in the middle of the Florida Keys, between Mile Marker 90.0 and Mile Marker 72.6 on U.S. Highway 1. The Florida Keys tourism council places it between Key Largo and Marathon and calls it a village of six islands, while the Village itself names five inhabited islands. Mile markers go down as you drive south. Florida State Parks says US 1 here is a National Scenic Highway and All-American Road.

Driving south, you cross Plantation Key, then the Snake Creek Bridge onto Windley Key, the Whale Harbor Bridge onto Upper Matecumbe Key, the Tea Table and Indian Key Channel bridges across Indian Key Fill, and the Irving R. Eyster Bridge onto Lower Matecumbe Key. FDOT rehabilitated the Tea Table Relief Bridge at Mile Marker 79.8 starting in November 2023 and received final acceptance on January 27, 2025. Apart from that project page, we found no official FDOT page about the Whale Harbor or Channel 5 bridges.

Your first stop: the visitor center

The Islamorada Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center is at 87100 Overseas Hwy, Mile Marker 87 bayside, phone 305-664-4503 or 800-FAB-KEYS. Village Hall is at 86800 Overseas Highway (305-664-6400).

By bike or on foot: the Overseas Heritage Trail

Florida State Parks says the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail has more than 90 miles of paved trail along a planned 106-mile corridor from Key Largo to Key West. It has no fee and is open from 8 a.m. to sunset. Its longest continuous paved section runs from MM 106 in Key Largo through MM 72 at Islamorada, a stretch that spans the Village’s posted range of MM 90.0 to MM 72.6. The trail runs alongside US 1 and incorporates 23 historic Flagler Railroad bridges. Details: Florida State Parks.

Getting around once you are here: Freebee

The Village says Freebee is an on-demand electric rideshare across Islamorada. Despite the name, it is not free: the $2 per rider fare started in July 2026. The Village also says Islamorada is no more than one mile wide at its widest point. Details: the Village ridesharing page.

By boat

The Village’s Plantation Yacht Harbor Marina at Founders Park, 87000 Overseas Highway, Mile Marker 87 bayside, has a public boat ramp. The ramp is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. It is free for Islamorada residents with valid ID, and non-residents pay $30 each way ($60 round trip), the rate effective October 1, 2026. The marina office is 305-852-2381 (VHF 16), and fuel is sold from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. FWC lists the Indian Key Fill public boat ramp (MM 79) as temporarily closed for repairs. Details: the Village marina page.

Once you are on the water, the Village bans motorized vessels from going faster than four knots or making a wake in marked idle speed zones, within 300 feet of a diver down flag, and within 300 feet of improved residential or commercial shorelines. It makes the Whale Harbor Wheel Ditch a Slow Speed Minimum Wake zone and keeps vessels out of the swim area off Port Antigua Beach and White Marlin Beach. The civil penalty is $250.

Islands you reach only by water

Indian Key Historic State Park, about a half-mile offshore, has been completely closed since April 2026 while its dock is rebuilt, and no reopening date has been posted. Lignumvitae Key is boat or kayak only. Florida Keys Boat Rentals at Robbie’s Marina runs a ferry there Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. (305-664-5533). The San Pedro wreck preserve lies in 18 feet of water about 1.25 nautical miles south of Indian Key, and Florida State Parks asks boaters to tie up to its mooring buoys.
